Designing for Ghana’s climate: passive shading & orientation

How orientation, deep shading and cross-ventilation keep West African buildings comfortable before a single air-conditioner is switched on.

Comfort in Accra’s climate starts with the section, not the services. Orientation away from the harsh east–west sun, deep overhangs and screened openings cut solar gain; cross-ventilation and stack effect move air through the plan.

KEY treats passive strategy as the first move on every project — so mechanical cooling supports the architecture rather than compensating for it.
